Why Paintless Dent Repair Is Possible

Fixing damage to your car may mean paying a lot of money, especially if your damage will cost less than your insurance deductible. Some auto body damage isn't even covered under your insurance, such as hail damage. It will depend on your policy. Small dents on your car, or one large one, can make your car look unsightly, but it can be expensive to have an entire panel of your car removed and replaced, or to have it repainted. The truth is, now it's possible to have a lot of small dents repaired without having to have an entire panel replaced or to have a new paint job.

Lasers Pin-Point Damage

Part of paintless dent repair involves pin-point accuracy with identifying all of the dimensions of the dents in your vehicle. An auto body shop can now laser your entire car and find any dent damage and measure the exact depth of the dent. By doing this, they can determine the exact extent of all the damage on the car, and whether or not all of the dents can be removed without having to completely replace a panel, which will also mean painting it. In many cases, having dent damage measured and diagrammed makes planning repairs exact, and the right tools are used for specific dent depths.

Tools Safe for Dent Removal

Many of the tools for dent removal have changed. A dent that has no scratches on it can often be popped out with a suction tool that won't strip the paint of your vehicle. Using the wrong tool size, however, can cause a dent to not fully pop out, which can cause the metal to bend and split the paint that's on the affected spot. Depending on the spot of a dent, and based on laser mapping, an auto body shop may opt to push out a large dent from the inside of the affected panel. This will make it less likely paint will get damaged during dent removal.

If dents can be corrected without any paint damage, you will likely save hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars on repairs. It's quite often the case that even if only a small portion of one of a car's exterior panels requires new paint, it may require the entire panel to be painted to create a consistent and even appearance of the color. If it's possible that an auto body shop can repair dents without doing a paint job, it's worth giving it a shot.
